Remove a portrait background and keep a usable PNG
Choose a suitable portrait, understand output size, and check edges before using your cutout.
Start with a photograph of a person
The Portrait Background Remover uses MODNet, a model designed for people. Choose a well-lit photograph with a clear outline. A wallet, shoe, or bottle is a different task; this portrait tool is not a reliable general product cutout service.
Accepted files are JPG, PNG, WebP, and BMP under 15 MB. Before inference, the workspace reduces images whose longest edge exceeds 1600 pixels. For example, a 4000 × 3000 upload is processed at 1600 × 1200. Keep your original file if you need a larger print version.
From upload to download
- Open the tool and choose your portrait. Check the preview to confirm you selected the right image.
- Choose Remove background. First use downloads approximately 26 MB of model files plus runtime files. Keep the tab open until it finishes.
- Compare the original with the result. Look at hair, fingers, shoulders, and any pale clothing near a bright background.
- Choose Download PNG. PNG preserves transparency; converting the cutout to JPEG removes the alpha channel.
Check the edge, not just the face
Place the downloaded PNG over both a dark and a light background in your design editor. A pale halo that disappears on white may show against navy. If fine hair has vanished, use a clearer original or touch up the mask manually. Running the same image repeatedly does not guarantee a better edge.
The model estimates foreground pixels; it does not rebuild missing body parts or add a new background. For a team page, leave enough space around the shoulders and use a consistent crop across portraits.
If processing fails
Try a smaller image, close memory-heavy tabs, and check that model downloads are not blocked. Use Stop to cancel a local run. A download error is not evidence that your photograph is unsuitable; it may be a connection or storage problem.
